About W1WDW

I am a broadcast engineer employed at WGME-TV and WPFO-TV in Portland, Maine, I have been in broadcasting for over 15 years.

I was first licensed in December of 2009 as KJ4QXZ and was granted my first vanity callsign WX4WTF on that Christmas morning. I was very active on local repeaters in Volusia County since becoming licensed and have participated in NTS, ARES and SKYWARN nets and organizations. I was a member of the Daytona Beach Amateur Radio Association (DBARA) and a member of the Volusia Amateur Radio Emergency Communication Service (VARECS). My family frequently vacations at the Walt Disney World resort in Florida, and I try to make it back to Daytona Beach whenever I can.

In June of 2010, I relocated back to Southern Maine in late 2012 I welcomed my son William into the world, and in 2013 I married my wife Ariel. She expressed her interest in pursuing her amateur license, studied for a few weeks and then took the technician exam and passed on her first try. She was assigned the callsign KC1CCB and liked it so much she decided not to apply for a vanity call. I am a member of the board of directors for the Portland Amatuer Wireless Association, Maine's oldest ARC as well as a member of Cumberland County ARES.

I am active mostly on 2m mobile, but also have 70cm capability, APRS and DMR. I also recently purchased my first HF rig, a Kenwood TS-480SAT and have been working CW on 40 meters using a computer keyer and decoder. I do not know code yet, so this has been helping me learn and make contacts.

I can frequenly be found on the 146.730 W1KVI PAWA club repeater in the southern Maine area and at the PAWA Field Day events each year!

Effective 3/22/2016, the FCC granted my license modification for a callsign change to W1WDW.

On 3/26/2016, I passed the Element 3 exam and received my CSCE for General Class, for now I am W1WDW/AG and have started to study for the Extra class exam.

Callsigns you might see or hear me use:

W1WDW
W1WDW/AG
W1WDW-1 (APRS Base)
W1WDW-5 (APRS Portable)
W1WDW-9 (APRS Mobile)

I use several logging systems for my contacts on HF including QRZ Logbook, eQSL, LoTW and of course direct physical QSL cards. If we have worked, please send a card and I will reply, same goes for the online logbooks! I am hoping that it will not take me long to acheive the WAS award.

I am in the process of having QSL cards printed up and once that occurs, I will send out cards to logged contacts. Coming soon I will have photos of my station and equipment and can't wait to work you on the air!
